321 Read Volunteer Registration Form

This program is designed to support and further develop first grade students who are at-risk of struggling with literacy.  Youth Link Southern Indiana pairs Reading Mentors with a first grade student at one of 14 elementary school locations throughout the county. These students will be supported for a total of 3 years.  The hope is for the mentor to remain matched with the reader for the entire three year period.

Mentors are expected to:

  • Pass a criminal background check, review and sign off on youth protection and volunteer policies
  • Complete a (1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year) Reading Mentor training (approximately 1 hour each year)
  • Visit their student once each week for 30 minutes during the school year
  • Maintain journal entries to track student progress

Volunteer Trainings

Once the school year is underway, new volunteers will be trained by the Resource Coordinator at the school where they will be serving. Volunteers must attend a training in years 1, 2, and 3. Annual trainings are typically held in September.
